Southern Mash is a creamy, rich, and flavorful twist on traditional mashed potatoes, made with cream cheese, butter, garlic, and a variety of optional toppings like cheese and green onions. It’s a comforting dish perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  1. 4 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  2. 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  3. 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  4. 1/2 cup sour cream
  5. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  6. 1/2 cup milk (or more for desired consistency)
  7. Salt and pepper, to taste
  8. 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional, for garnish)
  9. 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
  10. 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

Boil the potatoes: Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until fork-tender.

  1. Prepare the garlic: While the potatoes cook, melt 2 tablespoons butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat.
  2. Mash the potatoes: Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and return to the pot. Mash until smooth and creamy.
  3. Mix in the ingredients: Add the cream cheese, sour cream, remaining butter, and garlic to the mashed potatoes. Stir until fully incorporated, adding milk gradually until desired consistency is reached.
  4. Season: Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Adjust seasoning as needed.
  5. Garnish and serve: Transfer to a serving dish and top with cheddar cheese and chopped green onions (optional). Serve warm.

Notes

  • For added flavor, crumble crispy bacon on top or mix it into the mashed potatoes.
  • Fresh herbs like chives, rosemary, or thyme can be added for an extra fragrant touch.
  • For a spicier version, add diced jalapeño or red pepper flakes to the mixture.
