Sloppy Joe Air Fryer Hand Pies are a fun, portable twist on the classic Sloppy Joe, featuring a crispy crust filled with a savory, seasoned beef filling. Made in the air fryer for a healthier, crispy result, these hand pies are perfect for dinner, snacks, or parties.

Ingredients

  1. 1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter version)
    1/2 cup diced onion
1/2 cup bell pepper, finely diced (optional)
1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
    2 tablespoons ketchup
    1 tablespoon mustard
    1 tablespoon brown sugar
    1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
    Salt and pepper to taste
1 package refrigerated pie crusts (usually 2 crusts)
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper for easy removal.

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add diced onion and bell pepper (if using) to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir well and simmer for 5-7 minutes to thicken the sauce. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
  4. Roll out the pie crusts on a flat surface and cut out 6-8 circles (about 4-5 inches in diameter). Place a spoonful of the cooled Sloppy Joe filling in the center of each circle.
  5. Fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape, sealing the edges with a fork. Brush the top of each hand pie with the beaten egg.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place the hand pies in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving some space between them. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Let the hand pies cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy with dipping sauces like ranch or extra ketchup.

Notes

  1. For a vegetarian version, swap ground beef with lentils or a plant-based meat substitute.
  2. For a spicier twist, add hot sauce or diced jalapeños to the filling.
  3. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the filling before sealing the pies for a cheesy version.
  4. Use gluten-free pie crust for a gluten-free option.
  5. Store leftover hand pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
