Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for Cottage Pie)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Filling – In a large skillet, heat oil or butter over medium heat. Add onions, carrots, and garlic, and sauté until softened.
  2. Brown the Meat – Add the ground lamb and cook until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add Flavorings – Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and herbs. Pour in broth and let simmer until slightly thickened. Add peas in the last few minutes of cooking.
  4. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes – Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Mix in cheese if using.
  5. Assemble the Pie – Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes evenly on top. Use a fork to create ridges for a crispy texture.
  6. Bake – Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, until the top is golden brown.
  7. Serve – Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm!
