Salisbury steak with mushrooms is a comforting classic made from seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a savory mushroom and onion gravy. It’s a hearty, flavorful dish perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter (for cooking patties)
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced (white or cremini)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced (for gravy)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil (for gravy, if needed)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  2. Form into 4–6 oval-shaped patties.
  3. Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown patties for 4–5 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add more butter or oil if needed. Sauté mushrooms and sliced onions for 8–10 minutes until tender and golden.
  5. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir well. Cook for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
  7. Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
  8. Garnish with parsley if desired and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use fresh mushrooms for best flavor and texture.
  • Don’t overmix the beef to keep patties tender.
  • To thicken gravy more, add a cornstarch slurry if needed.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
