Salisbury hamburger steak is a comforting dish of seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy. Tender and flavorful, it is a classic meal often served with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix gently until the ingredients are evenly combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into four oval-shaped patties.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned, then remove and set aside.
  6. In the same skillet melt butter and add sliced onions and mushrooms.
  7. Cook for several minutes until softened.
  8. Sprinkle flour over the onion and mushroom mixture and stir well.
  9. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring to create a smooth gravy, then add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
  10. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for about 10 minutes until fully cooked and the gravy thickens.

Notes

  • Skip the mushrooms for a classic onion gravy version.
  • Use ground turkey instead of beef for a lighter variation.
  • Add extra garlic and mushrooms for deeper flavor in the gravy.
  • Brown the patties first, then finish cooking them in a slow cooker for a hands-off method.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles to soak up the gravy.
