  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. Add bread cubes evenly to the dish.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream (if using), pumpkin puree, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, and salt.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes. Press gently to soak. Cover and refrigerate overnight or let sit for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes or until the top is golden and the center is set.
  5. Let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup or whipped cream if desired.
