A rich prime rib French dip sandwich made with tender slices of beef layered on toasted rolls and served with a warm, savory au jus for dipping. This comforting sandwich highlights the bold flavor of prime rib with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly sliced prime rib
  • 4 French rolls or hoagie rolls
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook for 5–7 minutes to develop flavor, creating the au jus.
  3. Slice the French rolls and spread a small amount of butter on the inside.
  4. Toast the rolls in a skillet or oven until the inside is lightly golden.
  5. Place the sliced prime rib into the simmering au jus for about 30–60 seconds to warm it without overcooking.
  6. Remove the meat from the broth and pile it onto the toasted rolls.
  7. Place provolone or Swiss cheese slices over the warm meat.
  8. If desired, place the sandwiches under a broiler for about 1 minute until the cheese melts.
  9. Pour the remaining au jus into small serving bowls.
  10. Serve the sandwiches warm with the au jus on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Add caramelized onions for extra sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Spread garlic butter on the rolls before toasting for richer flavor.
  • Top with sautéed mushrooms and Swiss cheese for a steakhouse-style version.
  • Add horseradish sauce or spicy mustard for a spicy variation.
  • Warm leftover prime rib gently in the au jus to keep the meat tender.
