Ingredients

  • 1 lb thinly shaved ribeye steak (or sirloin, flank steak)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls, sliced in half horizontally
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 12 slices provolone cheese (or Cooper Sharp cheese)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Freeze the steak for 30-45 minutes to firm it up, then slice it thinly against the grain.
  • Heat butter and oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add steak, seasoning with salt, paprika, mustard powder, and black pepper. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth to deglaze the pan. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
  • In a separate pan, heat oil and cook onions and bell peppers until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half. Spread mayonnaise on the cut sides and toast them in the oven for 5-6 minutes until golden.
  • Layer the bottom half of the rolls in a baking dish, then top with steak, caramelized onions and peppers, and provolone cheese.
  • Place the top half of the rolls on top, pressing down gently.
  • Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 10-15 minutes until cheese melts, then uncover and bake for an additional 5 minutes to brown the tops.
  • Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Cheese Options: You can use American cheese or Cheese Whiz for a more authentic Philly cheesesteak experience.
  • Spicy Variations: Add jalapeños or hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Mushroom Option: Sauté mushrooms with the onions and peppers for added flavor
