Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and add the cubed bread evenly inside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream (if using), granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the bread. Press gently to help the bread absorb the liquid. Cover and refrigerate overnight or let sit for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. In a medium bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, syrup, chopped pecans, cinnamon, and salt. Spoon over the top of the casserole.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes, until golden and set in the center.
  7. Let cool for 5–10 minutes. Serve with powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best texture and to prevent sogginess.
  • Assemble the night before for an easy, stress-free morning.
  • Add fruit like apples or bananas between layers for variation.
