Ingredients
2 bagels, sliced in half
4 slices cheddar cheese
1/2 pear, thinly sliced
1/2 apple, thinly sliced
1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp honey (optional)
1 tsp fresh thyme (optional)
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
Heat olive oil and half of the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until soft, golden, and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt.
Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
Lightly butter the cut sides of the bagel halves.
Place the bagel halves butter-side down in the skillet over medium heat.
Add cheddar cheese slices to the bottom halves of the bagels and allow them to begin melting.
Layer thin slices of pear and apple over the cheese.
Add a generous spoonful of caramelized onions on top.
Sprinkle with black pepper and optional fresh thyme. Drizzle a small amount of honey if desired.
Place the top halves of the bagels over the filling and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the bagels are crisp and golden.
Notes
Brie can replace cheddar for a creamier and milder flavor that pairs well with fruit.
Add chopped toasted walnuts or pecans for extra crunch.
Use maple syrup instead of honey for a deeper sweetness.
Spread a thin layer of fig jam or honey mustard for extra flavor.
Caramelized onions can be prepared ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
