A classic Monte Cristo sandwich layered with ham, turkey, and melted Swiss cheese between egg-dipped bread and grilled until golden. Finished with powdered sugar and served with jam, it offers a delicious balance of sweet and savory flavors.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices sandwich bread
  • 4 slices ham
  • 4 slices turkey
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup strawberry jam or raspberry jam for serving
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

Instructions

  1. Lay out the slices of bread and assemble two sandwiches by layering Swiss cheese, ham, turkey, and another slice of cheese between two slices of bread.
  2. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add the butter.
  4. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides evenly.
  5. Place the sandwiches in the heated skillet.
  6. Cook for 3–4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  7. Remove from the skillet and allow the sandwiches to cool slightly.
  8. Lightly dust the tops with powdered sugar.
  9. Slice the sandwiches in halves or quarters.
  10. Serve warm with strawberry or raspberry jam on the side.

Notes

  • Use brioche, challah, or sourdough bread for extra flavor and texture.
  • Gruyère or provolone can replace Swiss cheese for a different taste.
  • Add a small amount of sugar and vanilla to the egg mixture for a sweeter brunch-style version.
  • The sandwiches can be baked in the oven instead of skillet-cooked if preferred.
  • Serve with fresh fruit or a green salad for a balanced meal.
