Mom’s Homemade Spaghetti is a comforting classic featuring a rich, meaty tomato sauce simmered with garlic, herbs, and pantry staples. Served over spaghetti and topped with Parmesan, it’s a beloved family favorite perfect for weeknights or Sunday dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 12 oz spaghetti noodles, cooked
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • Fresh parsley or basil (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion for 5 minutes until softened.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Mix well.
  5. Add oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and sugar (if using). Stir and bring to a gentle simmer.
  6. Cover and simmer on low for 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti noodles according to package directions. Drain.
  8. Serve the sauce over cooked spaghetti. Top with Parmesan and fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

  • To reduce acidity, add a splash of cream or a pinch of baking soda.
  • Double the sauce and freeze half for another meal.
  • Use Italian sausage or a beef/pork mix for extra flavor.
