Loaded Chili Cheese Fries combine crispy fries, hearty homemade chili, and melty cheddar cheese into the ultimate comfort food. Perfect for game days, parties, or a cozy indulgent meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 large Russet potatoes or 1 bag frozen French fries
  • Vegetable oil (for frying or baking)
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup kidney beans or black beans (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional toppings: sour cream, green onions, jalapeños, diced tomatoes

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir in tomato sauce and beans (if using). Simmer for 15–20 minutes until thickened.
  3. If using fresh potatoes: peel (optional), cut into sticks, soak in water for 30 minutes, then drain and dry. Fry at 300°F for 4–5 minutes, then again at 375°F for 2–3 minutes until crispy. Alternatively, bake at 425°F for 25–30 minutes.
  4. If using frozen fries: bake or air fry according to package instructions until golden and crispy.
  5. Arrange hot fries on a serving platter or baking sheet. Spoon hot chili over the fries.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheddar over the top. Broil for 2–3 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Top with optional garnishes like sour cream, green onions, jalapeños, or diced tomatoes. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Double frying fresh potatoes yields the crispiest base for toppings.
  • Sharp cheddar melts well and adds bold flavor, but other cheeses work too.
  • Prepare chili ahead of time to speed up assembly.
  • Layering cheese between fries and chili can help prevent sogginess.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven for best texture.
