Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 small onion, chopped

1 (15 oz) can of tomato sauce

1 (6 oz) can of tomato paste

1 (14.5 oz) can of crushed tomatoes

1 tbsp Italian seasoning

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

2 cups ricotta cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (for topping)

2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and chopped onion over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are softened, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat.

  • Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes (if using) to the skillet. Stir to combine and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, Parmesan cheese, and 1 1/2 cups of shredded mozzarella. Mix until smooth.

  • Transfer the beef mixture into a baking dish (8×8-inch or similar). Spread the ricotta mixture evenly on top of the beef mixture.

  • Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded mozzarella over the ricotta layer.

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

  • Optional: Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving.

Notes

  • You can make this dip ahead of time by preparing it the day before, refrigerating it, and baking it the day of.

  • Add more mozzarella or try provolone for a cheesier version.

  • For a spicier version, increase the red pepper flakes or add chopped jalapeños.
