Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk (or milk alternative)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 ounces semisweet or milk chocolate (chopped or chips)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, shaved chocolate, or cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add 2 tablespoons of milk and whisk to form a smooth paste to prevent lumps.
  3. Gradually whisk in the remaining milk and heat over medium-low heat, stirring often.
  4. When the milk is hot (but not boiling), add the chopped chocolate and stir until fully melted and smooth.
