Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy such as oat, almond, or coconut)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or maple syrup (to taste)
  • 1/4 cup dark or milk chocolate (chopped or chips)
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • Crushed candy canes or chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and a few tablespoons of milk over medium heat until smooth.
  2. Gradually add the remaining milk, whisking constantly until well combined and heated through.
  3. Stir in the chopped chocolate until melted and smooth.
  4. Add the peppermint extract, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix well.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness or peppermint strength to your liking.
  6. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream.
  7. Garnish with crushed candy canes or chocolate shavings before serving.

Notes

  • Start with a small amount of peppermint extract—it’s strong, and you can always add more.
  • For a vegan version, use dairy-free milk and chocolate.
  • Add a shot of espresso for a peppermint mocha twist.
  • Use white chocolate for a creamy peppermint white cocoa.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat gently on the stove.
