Homemade Sweet Onion Sauce is the perfect balance of sweetness, tang, and savory flavor. Made with caramelized onions, apple cider vinegar, and a hint of mustard, this versatile sauce is great as a topping for burgers, sandwiches, grilled vegetables, or as a dip for fries. Quick and easy to make, this flavorful sauce adds depth and richness to any dish!

Ingredients

For the Sauce:

1 large sweet onion, finely chopped

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons ketchup

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onions:
In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped sweet onion and sauté for 6-8 minutes, or until the onions become soft and slightly caramelized. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

  2. Add sweeteners and seasonings:
Once the onions are soft, add the brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir everything together to combine.

  3. Simmer the sauce:
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sauce should thicken slightly, and the onions will become tender. If it gets too thick, add a little water or more vinegar to achieve your desired consistency.

  4. Season to taste:
Taste the sauce and add salt and pepper to your liking. Adjust the sweetness or tanginess as needed by adding more brown sugar or vinegar.

  5. Cool and serve:
Once the sauce has reached the desired consistency and flavor, remove it from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm or cold, depending on your preference.
