Homemade ground beef taco meat is a quick, flavorful, and customizable filling perfect for tacos, burritos, nachos, and more. With just a few ingredients, you can create a savory, seasoned base that’s both juicy and perfectly spiced.

Ingredients

  1. For the taco meat:
1 lb ground beef (80/20 is ideal)
    1 small onion, finely chopped
    2 cloves garlic, minced
1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade seasoning)
1/4 cup water (or beef broth)
Optional toppings: shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, salsa, or guacamole
    For Homemade Taco Seasoning (Optional):
    1 tablespoon chili powder
    1 teaspoon ground cumin
    1 teaspoon paprika
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
    1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
    1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
    1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Cook the ground beef: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.

  1. Add the onion and garlic: Stir in the chopped onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
  2. Season the meat: Add the taco seasoning or homemade seasoning mix and 1/4 cup water (or beef broth). Stir and simmer for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  3. Simmer and adjust: Taste the meat and adjust seasoning if needed. Add more water or broth for a saucier consistency if desired.
  4. Serve: Serve the taco meat in taco shells or tortillas and top with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For leaner meat, substitute ground turkey or chicken for the ground beef.
  • Use this taco meat in tacos, burritos, taco salads, nachos, or over rice for a quick meal.
  • If you want spicier taco meat, add extra cayenne pepper, hot sauce, or diced jalapeños while cooking.
