Homemade Biscuits are the ultimate comfort food, soft on the inside with a golden, buttery exterior. These easy-to-make biscuits are perfect for any meal, whether served with jam, gravy, or just butter.

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
3/4 cup buttermilk (or regular milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar added)
1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a touch of sweetness)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and sugar (if using).
  2. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces of butter. Use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers.
  3. Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together, then pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  5. Use a round biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits, pressing straight down without twisting. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispy edges.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Cool for a few minutes, then serve with butter, jam, or gravy.

Notes

  1. Cheddar Biscuits: Add 1/2 cup of grated cheddar cheese to the dry ingredients for a cheesy twist.
  2. Herb Biscuits: Add 1-2 teaspoons of fresh or dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or chives for added flavor.
  3. Flaky Biscuits: For extra flakiness, fold the dough over a few times before cutting out the biscuits.
  4. Sweet Biscuits: Add honey or a bit of sugar for a sweet biscuit perfect with fruit or jam.
  5. Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  6. Reheating: Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or in the microwave for 10-15 seconds.
