Ingredients
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 cup olive oil or coconut oil
1/2 cup milk or almond milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8-inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, honey or maple syrup, applesauce, oil, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring just until combined.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing or frosting.
Notes
Do not overmix the batter to keep the cake tender.
Dark chocolate chips or chopped nuts can be added for extra texture.
