Hamburger Steak with Mushroom Gravy is a comforting classic featuring juicy beef patties simmered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy. Perfect with mashed potatoes or rice, this hearty dish brings homestyle flavor to your dinner table with minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into oval patties, about ½ to ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add more butter if needed and sauté mushrooms until golden brown.
  5. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir to coat. Cook for 1 minute.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring until the gravy thickens.
  7. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  8. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the top, cover, and simmer for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley or thyme and serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • Use a mix of ground beef and pork for extra flavor and tenderness.
  • For a creamier gravy, add a splash of cream or sour cream.
  • Don’t overmix the meat to keep patties tender.
  • Double the gravy ingredients if you like extra sauce for sides.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge up to 4 days or freeze for 2 months.
