German-Inspired Apple Sauce is a smooth, gently spiced fruit compote made with fresh apples, cinnamon, and a touch of lemon. Lightly sweet and fragrant, it works beautifully as both a side dish and dessert accompaniment.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Place the chopped apples in a medium saucepan.
  2. Add water, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  4. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft.
  5. Remove from heat.
  6. For a chunky texture, mash the apples with a potato masher. For a smooth applesauce, blend using an immersion blender or standard blender.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or cinnamon if needed.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for deeper flavor.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or cloves for extra warmth.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Serve warm or chilled depending on preference.
