A tasty, quick twist on the traditional sloppy joe!

Ingredients

For the Garlic Bread:

  • 4 hoagie-style rolls, sliced lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Garlic Bread:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise and place them on a baking sheet.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with garlic salt. Spread the mixture evenly over the cut sides of the hoagie rolls.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the rolls are lightly toasted and golden brown. Remove from the oven and set aside.

2. Make the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  1. While the rolls toast, cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.

3. Assemble the Sloppy Joe Melts:

  1. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over the toasted hoagie rolls.
  2. Top each roll with shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese.
  3. Return the topped rolls to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  4. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use Different Bread: Swap hoagie rolls for Texas toast, baguettes, or ciabatta.
  • Try a Different Protein: Replace ground beef with ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based meat.
  • Spicy Option: Add hot sauce or crushed red pepper flakes to the sloppy joe mixture for extra heat.
  • Cheese Variations: Swap mozzarella and cheddar for provolone, gouda, or pepper jack for different flavors.
  • Add Toppings: For extra texture and flavor, jalapeños, or caramelized onions.
