Fresh Indian Onion Salad is a vibrant, tangy side dish made with thinly sliced red onions, fresh herbs, and bright lemon juice. Crisp and refreshing, it adds bold flavor and crunch to curries, grilled dishes, and rice meals.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium red onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • Pinch of red chili powder (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon thinly sliced cucumber (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon thinly sliced tomato (optional)

Instructions

  1. Peel the red onions and slice them thinly into rings or half-moons.
  2. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and gently separate the layers.
  3. Add the chopped green chili if using.
  4. Sprinkle in the salt, roasted cumin powder, and red chili powder.
  5. Drizzle the fresh lemon juice over the onions.
  6. Add the chopped cilantro and optional cucumber or tomato slices.
  7. Toss everything gently until well combined.
  8. Let the salad rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • Soak sliced onions in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce sharpness, then drain well before mixing.
  • This salad is best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
  • A sprinkle of chaat masala or a few pomegranate seeds adds extra flavor and color.
  • Avoid adding too much salt too early to keep the onions crisp.
