French Toast is a classic breakfast dish made by soaking slices of bread in a sweet egg mixture and pan-frying until golden. Crisp on the outside and custardy on the inside, it’s endlessly versatile and always comforting.

Ingredients

  1. 46 slices thick-cut bread (brioche, challah, sourdough)
  2. 3 large eggs
  3. 3/4 cup milk (or cream for richness)
  4. 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  6. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  7. Pinch of salt
  8. Butter, for cooking
  9. Optional toppings: maple syrup, powdered sugar, berries, whipped cream

Instructions

In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.

  1. Dip bread slices into the custard mixture, soaking each side for 15–30 seconds depending on the bread’s thickness and staleness.
  2. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Melt a small amount of butter to coat the surface.
  3. Place soaked bread slices on the hot skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Serve warm with your favorite toppings like maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread so it absorbs custard without becoming soggy.
  • For crispier toast, cook with a mix of butter and oil and avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Make a French toast casserole by layering soaked bread in a baking dish and baking at 350°F (175°C) for 30–40 minutes.
  • Reheat leftovers in a toaster or oven for best texture.
