French toast with sausage links is a classic sweet-and-savory breakfast pairing that features golden, custard-soaked bread and sizzling sausage. It’s a warm, comforting dish perfect for a weekend brunch or weekday treat.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or half-and-half
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp butter (for cooking)
  • 12 breakfast sausage links (pork, turkey, or plant-based)
  • Optional: maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, extra butter for serving

Instructions

  1. Make the custard: In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.
  2. Cook the sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage links until browned and cooked through, about 10–12 minutes. Alternatively, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–20 minutes, turning halfway.
  3. Dip and cook French toast: Heat butter in a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Dip bread slices into the custard, coating both sides. Cook 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  4. Serve: Plate French toast with sausage links. Top with syrup, berries, and powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for better texture—fresh bread may become too soggy.
  • Don’t soak bread too long in the custard to prevent it from falling apart.
  • Keep French toast warm in a 200°F oven while cooking in batches.
  • For crispy sausage, pan-fry over medium-high heat at the end of cooking.
