French Toast is a classic breakfast dish made by soaking thick slices of bread in a sweet, spiced egg custard and pan-frying them until golden. It’s simple, satisfying, and perfect for customizing with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 8 slices thick bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast)
  • Butter or oil for cooking
  • Toppings of choice (maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, etc.)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt.
  2. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease with butter or oil.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds per side.
  4. Place soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with remaining slices, greasing the pan as needed.
  6. Serve warm with your favorite toppings such as syrup, powdered sugar, or fruit.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread for better absorption and texture.
  • Don’t oversoak the bread to avoid sogginess.
  • For a crispier crust, add 1 tablespoon of flour or cornstarch to the custard mixture.
  • Customize with sweet or savory fillings or toppings.
  • French Toast freezes well—great for meal prep.
