This Lighter French Onion Dip is a healthier take on the classic party favorite! Made with caramelized onions, Greek yogurt or light sour cream, and fresh herbs, it’s creamy, flavorful, and perfect for dipping chips, veggies, or spreading on sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
  • 3 medium yellow or white onions, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ cups light sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt)
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ¼ tsp dried thyme)
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions: Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Add diced onions and sauté for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until golden brown. Add a splash of water if needed to prevent burning.
  • Add Garlic: Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Cool the Onions: Transfer the onions to a bowl and let them cool in the fridge for 15 minutes.
  • Mix the Dip: In a mixing bowl, combine the cooled onions with sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, chives, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  • Chill & Serve: Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free sour cream or cashew cream.
  • Make it extra creamy by adding a bit of mayo or cream cheese.
  • Spicy variation: Add red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Enhance the flavor by deglazing the onions with a splash of white wine.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
