Egg Strata with Ground Beef is a savory, protein-rich breakfast casserole made with layers of bread, seasoned ground beef, eggs, and melty cheese. It’s perfect for weekend brunches, holiday breakfasts, or make-ahead meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk or half-and-half
  • 6 cups bread cubes (day-old or toasted French or sourdough bread)
  • 1½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or blend)
  • 1 small onion, diced (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped mushrooms
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped spinach or tomatoes
  • Optional: Fresh herbs like parsley or chives

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add onion and garlic (if using) and sauté for 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and optional seasonings or herbs.
  5. Place bread cubes evenly in the greased baking dish.
  6. Spread the cooked beef mixture evenly over the bread.
  7. Pour the egg mixture over the top, pressing down slightly so the bread absorbs the liquid.
  8. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top.
  9. Let the strata rest for 10–15 minutes (or refrigerate overnight).
  10. Bake for 40–50 minutes, until eggs are set and the top is golden brown.
  11. Cool for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use crusty or day-old bread to prevent sogginess.
  • Customize with your favorite vegetables, cheeses, or herbs.
  • Prepare the night before for an easy morning bake.
  • Freezes well in slices for quick reheating.
  • Sauté vegetables before adding to reduce moisture and boost flavor.
