Dinner Rolls are soft, fluffy, and buttery homemade bread rolls that pair perfectly with any meal. Lightly golden on the outside and pillowy on the inside, they’re easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast or instant yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (plus more for brushing)
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy (skip this step if using instant yeast).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, egg, and melted butter. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead by hand or mixer for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal portions. Shape into smooth balls and place in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  6. Cover and let rise again until puffy, about 30–45 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Brush tops of rolls with melted butter.
  9. Bake for 18–22 minutes, until golden brown on top.
  10. Brush with more butter after baking. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • For extra soft rolls, don’t overbake and brush with butter right after baking.
  • Use bread flour for chewier texture.
  • You can make the dough ahead and refrigerate after the first rise.
  • Freeze baked rolls for up to 2 months; thaw and reheat before serving.
