Crock Pot Southern Grits are rich, creamy, and slow-cooked to perfection. Made with simple ingredients like stone-ground grits, milk, and butter, they make an easy and comforting side dish or breakfast base.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup stone-ground or old-fashioned grits
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Optional: 1 cup shredded cheese, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, 2 tablespoons cream cheese

Instructions

  1. Grease the inside of your crock pot with butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. In the crock pot, combine grits, water, milk or cream, and salt. Stir well to mix.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or high for 3–4 hours, stirring occasionally if possible.
  4. Once grits are tender and creamy, stir in butter and any optional seasonings or cheese.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed before serving. Serve hot with additional toppings if desired.

Notes

  • Use stone-ground or old-fashioned grits—quick or instant varieties are not recommended for slow cooking.
  • Stir occasionally during cooking if you’re able to help prevent sticking.
  • Add a splash of milk or water when reheating to restore creaminess.
  • Customize with cheese, garlic, herbs, or spice for different flavor variations.
