Crispy Potato Topped Beef is a hearty baked dish featuring savory seasoned ground beef topped with thinly sliced potatoes that bake into a golden, crispy layer. It’s comforting, filling, and perfect for a satisfying family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Place the thinly sliced potatoes in a bowl of cold water to prevent browning while preparing the filling.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the chopped onion until soft and translucent.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  6. Season the beef with salt, black pepper, paprika, and dried thyme. Stir to combine.
  7. Pour in the beef broth and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes until slightly thickened.
  8. Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  9. Drain and pat the potato slices dry, then arrange them in overlapping layers over the beef.
  10. Brush the potatoes with melted butter and a little olive oil, then season lightly with salt and pepper.
  11. Bake for 40–45 minutes until the potatoes are golden and crispy.
  12. If using cheese, sprinkle it over the top during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  13. Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add vegetables such as carrots, peas, or mushrooms to the beef mixture for additional flavor and nutrition.
  • Ground lamb or turkey can be substituted for the beef.
  • Sweet potatoes can replace regular potatoes for a slightly sweeter variation.
  • Ensure the potato slices are about 1/8 inch thick so they cook evenly and become crispy.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
