Creamy Buttermilk Coleslaw is a fresh, crunchy side dish made with shredded cabbage and carrots tossed in a tangy, slightly sweet buttermilk dressing. It’s quick to make and perfect for pairing with BBQ, fried chicken, or sandwiches.

Ingredients

    • For the slaw:
    • 4 cups green cabbage, finely shredded
    • 1 cup red cabbage, finely shredded (optional)
    • 1 cup carrots, shredded

  • For the dressing:
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery seed (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine green cabbage, red cabbage (if using), and shredded carrots.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, mustard, salt, pepper, and celery seed until smooth.
  3. Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture and toss until evenly coated.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Toss again before serving and adjust seasoning if needed.

Notes

  • Use pre-shredded coleslaw mix to save prep time.
  • Add green onions, apples, or raisins for flavor variations.
  • Substitute Greek yogurt for a lighter dressing.
  • Include chopped herbs like dill or parsley for freshness.
  • Add jalapeños for a spicy kick.
