This Easy Classic Philly Cheesesteak recipe brings the authentic flavors of Philadelphia’s favorite sandwich to your kitchen. Featuring thinly sliced ribeye steak, melted cheese, and sautéed onions, all nestled in a soft hoagie roll, this homemade version is just as delicious as the original. Ready in under 30 minutes, it’s the perfect meal for any occasion!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ribeye steak
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese, American cheese, or Cheez Whiz
  • Optional: Sautéed green bell peppers, mushrooms

Instructions

  • Prepare the Steak: Freeze the ribeye for about 30 minutes to make slicing easier. Using a sharp knife, cut against the grain into thin slices.
  • Sauté the Onions: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions (and optional bell peppers or mushrooms). Cook for about 10 minutes until caramelized and tender. Remove from skillet.
  • Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high. Add thinly sliced steak, season with salt and black pepper, and cook for about 5 minutes until browned.
  • Combine Ingredients: Return the sautéed onions and vegetables to the skillet with the beef. Stir to combine and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Add Cheese: Place cheese slices over the beef mixture. Allow it to melt naturally or cover the skillet briefly to speed up the process.
  • Prepare the Rolls: Slice the hoagie rolls and lightly toast them if desired.
  • Assemble the Sandwiches: Fill each roll with the cheesy steak mixture. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Cheese Options: Provolone, American cheese, or Cheez Whiz each offer a different flavor profile.
  • Toppings: Add sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or hot peppers for customization.
  • Prevent Sogginess: Toast the rolls and ensure excess moisture from vegetables is cooked off.
