The Classic Italian Sub Sandwich is a hearty, flavorful sandwich loaded with layers of savory deli meats, cheese, and fresh vegetables, all nestled between a soft, yet sturdy, sub roll. With its combination of salty salami, spicy pepperoni, and creamy provolone cheese, this sandwich is the perfect blend of bold flavors and textures.

Ingredients

  1. 1 sub roll or hoagie bun (6-8 inches)
    23 slices of salami
    23 slices of pepperoni
23 slices of capicola (or ham as an alternative)
    2 slices of provolone cheese
    1/4 cup lettuce, shredded
    1/4 cup tomato, sliced
1/4 cup red onion, thinly sliced
1/4 cup banana peppers or mild pepperoncini
    2 tbsp olive oil
    1 tbsp red wine vinegar
    1/2 tsp dried oregano
    Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Slice the sub roll lengthwise, making sure not to cut all the way through, so the sandwich holds together.

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  2. Drizzle a little of the olive oil mixture onto both sides of the inside of the sub roll.
  3. Layer the slices of salami, pepperoni, and capicola on the bottom half of the roll.
  4. Add the slices of provolone cheese on top of the deli meats.
  5. Pile on the shredded lettuce, tomato slices, red onion rings, and banana peppers.
  6. Drizzle the remaining olive oil mixture over the vegetables for added flavor.
  7. Close the sandwich and press down gently to hold everything together.
  8. Slice the sandwich in half (or quarters) and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. Spicy Italian Sub: Add spicy jalapeños or red pepper flakes to give the sandwich an extra kick.
  2. Vegetarian Italian Sub: Skip the deli meats and pile on extra vegetables like roasted red peppers, olives, and artichoke hearts for a vegetarian option.
  3. Cheese Swap: Replace provolone with mozzarella, cheddar, or even pepper jack for a different flavor profile.
  4. Grilled Italian Sub: If you prefer a warm sandwich, wrap the sub in foil and toast it in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10-12 minutes.
  5. Italian Dressing: Instead of olive oil and vinegar, you can use store-bought or homemade Italian dressing for added flavor.
  6. Storage: The sandwich is best enjoyed immediately, but if you have leftovers, store the components (deli meats, cheese, and veggies) in airtight containers in the fridge. Assemble the sandwich fresh when ready to eat.
  7. Reheating: If you’ve made a grilled version, you can reheat it in the oven or toaster oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes until warm and crispy.
