Classic French Toast is a simple, comforting breakfast made with bread dipped in a sweet, spiced egg custard and pan-fried until golden. It’s perfect for weekends, brunch, or any day you want something special.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick-cut bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  2. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a small amount of butter.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds per side. Let excess drip off.
  4. Place soaked bread on the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Repeat with remaining slices, adding more butter as needed.
  6. Serve warm with your favorite toppings like maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale or day-old bread for best texture and custard absorption.
  • For added crunch, press dipped slices into crushed cereal before frying.
  • Make a savory version by omitting sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla and topping with eggs or cheese.
  • Double the recipe for a crowd or bake in a casserole for a hands-off brunch option.
