Chocolate Chip Scones are tender, buttery pastries filled with rich chocolate chips. Perfect for breakfast or an afternoon treat, they bake up golden on the outside and soft inside with melty chocolate in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1 tbsp turbinado sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add cold cubed butter and cut it into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in chocolate chips.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together cream, egg, and vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir gently until a dough forms. Do not overmix.
  7. Turn dough onto a floured surface and shape into a circle about 3/4 to 1 inch thick.
  8. Cut into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Brush tops with a little extra cream and sprinkle with turbinado sugar if using.
  10. Bake for 16–20 minutes, until tops are golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  11. Cool slightly and serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for flaky texture; don’t overwork the dough.
  • Chilling the cut scones before baking helps them hold their shape.
  • Try adding nuts, orange zest, or a vanilla glaze for extra flavor.
  • Scones freeze well baked or unbaked—adjust baking time if baking from frozen.
