Chicken Parmesan is a crispy, cheesy Italian-American favorite featuring breaded chicken breasts fried until golden, topped with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella, then baked to perfection. It’s hearty, comforting, and perfect for both casual dinners and special occasions.

Ingredients

  1. 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  2. 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  3. 2 large eggs, beaten
  4. 1 cup bread crumbs (Italian seasoned or plain + herbs)
  5. 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  6. Olive oil or vegetable oil, for frying
  7. 1 1/2 cups marinara sauce
  8. 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded or sliced
  9. Salt and pepper, to taste
  10. Fresh basil or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat oven: Set oven to 400°F (200°C).

  1. Prep chicken: Pound chicken breasts to even thickness. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Breading station: Place flour in one plate, beaten eggs in a shallow bowl, and bread crumbs mixed with Parmesan on another plate.
  3. Bread chicken: Coat chicken in flour, dip in eggs, then press into bread crumb mixture.
  4. Fry: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry chicken 3–4 minutes per side until golden. Transfer to a baking dish.
  5. Top and bake: Spoon marinara sauce over each chicken breast. Add mozzarella on top. Bake 15–20 minutes, until cheese is melted and chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) internally.
  6. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with basil or parsley. Serve hot with pasta, bread, or salad.

Notes

  1. For a lighter version, bake breaded chicken at 425°F (220°C) for 20 minutes before topping with sauce and cheese.
  2. Provolone can be used instead of mozzarella for a richer flavor.
  3. Gluten-free bread crumbs and flour can make this dish gluten-free.
  4. To keep breading crispy, don’t add sauce until just before baking.
