A rich and creamy baked casserole made with frozen cheese pierogies, crispy bacon, sautéed onions, and plenty of melted cheddar. Perfect comfort food for family dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 (16–20 oz) package frozen cheese pierogies
  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 4 oz cream cheese or 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp chopped green onions or chives (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook chopped bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside, leaving some fat in the pan.
  3. Sauté diced onions in bacon fat until golden and soft. Remove from heat.
  4. In a small saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Whisk in milk and cream cheese (or sour cream) until smooth. Add garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
  5. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange frozen pierogies in a single layer.
  6. Pour the cream sauce evenly over the pierogies.
  7. Top with sautéed onions, cooked bacon, and shredded cheddar cheese.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake another 10–15 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  10. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with green onions or chives if desired.

Notes

  • No need to thaw the pierogies before baking.
  • Use homemade pierogies if available—boil first before adding to the casserole.
  • Make it vegetarian by omitting bacon and adding sautéed mushrooms.
  • For a spicier dish, use pepper jack cheese or add jalapeños.
  • Freezes well before or after baking for up to 2 months.
