Chana Chaat is a vibrant and refreshing Indian street food salad made with chickpeas, fresh vegetables, aromatic spices, and tangy tamarind chutney. A perfect combination of savory, spicy, and tangy flavors.

Ingredients

  1. 1 can (400g) chickpeas (or 1 cup cooked chickpeas)
    1 small cucumber, diced
    1 small tomato, diced
    1/4 red onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup fresh coriander leaves, chopped
12 green chilies, finely chopped (optional, for heat)
1 tablespoon tamarind chutney (store-bought or homemade)
    1 tablespoon lemon juice
    1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
    1 teaspoon chaat masala
    1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
    Salt, to taste
Fresh pomegranate seeds (optional, for garnish)
Sev (crunchy chickpea noodles, optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the chickpeas: If using canned chickpeas, drain and rinse them thoroughly. If using cooked chickpeas, ensure they are soft and well-cooked.

  1. Combine the ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the chickpeas, diced cucumber, diced tomato, chopped red onion, green chilies (if using), and fresh coriander leaves.
  2. Add the spices and chutney: Sprinkle in the roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, red chili powder, and salt. Add the tamarind chutney and lemon juice, then toss everything together gently to coat the ingredients in the spices and chutney.
  3. Garnish: If desired, garnish the Chana Chaat with fresh pomegranate seeds and sev for an extra crunch. Adjust seasoning with additional salt or spices if needed.
  4. Serve: Serve immediately as a refreshing snack or appetizer, and enjoy the burst of flavors!

Notes

  1. For a heartier version, add boiled and diced potatoes for extra texture.
  2. This dish is naturally vegan, but you can add a dollop of coconut yogurt or a drizzle of dairy-free yogurt for extra creaminess.
  3. For a spicier version, increase the amount of green chilies or add cayenne pepper.
  4. Add raw mango or a sprinkle of sugar to balance the tangy and spicy elements with sweetness.
  5. Chana Chaat is best served fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 day.
