Ingredients

Fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced – 4 oz
Ripe tomatoes, sliced – 1 medium tomato
Fresh basil leaves – 8 leaves
Ciabatta or baguette bread, sliced – 4 slices
Extra virgin olive oil – 1 tbsp
Balsamic glaze or reduction – 2 tbsp
Salt and freshly ground black pepper – to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread horizontally to create sandwich halves.
  2. Lightly drizzle the inside of each bread half with extra virgin olive oil.
  3. Layer slices of fresh mozzarella evenly on the bottom half of the bread.
  4. Add slices of ripe tomato on top of the mozzarella.
  5. Place fresh basil leaves over the tomato slices.
  6. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  7. Drizzle balsamic glaze over the layered ingredients.
  8. Close the sandwich with the top half of the bread and press gently.
  9. Optionally, toast the sandwich in a panini press or skillet for 2-3 minutes to warm the cheese slightly.
  10. Slice in half and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Add a layer of pesto spread on the bread for extra flavor.
  • Include avocado slices for creaminess.
  • Substitute mozzarella with burrata for a richer texture.
  • Add grilled chicken or prosciutto for a protein boost.
  • Use whole grain or sourdough bread for a different bread flavor and texture.
  • Best enjoyed fresh; store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
  • Reheat gently to soften cheese but avoid overheating to preserve fresh flavors.
