The Caprese Sandwich is a simple, fresh, and flavorful sandwich featuring creamy mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, aromatic basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. It’s a perfect light meal that captures the essence of summer in every bite.

Ingredients

  1. 2 slices of crusty bread (such as baguette, ciabatta, or sourdough)
46 slices of fresh mozzarella cheese
    1 large ripe tomato, sliced
A handful of fresh basil leaves

    1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic glaze or balsamic vinegar
    Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Prepare the bread: Toast the slices of bread in a toaster or on a skillet until golden brown and crispy to prevent sogginess.

  1. Assemble the sandwich: Layer the mozzarella slices on one slice of toasted bread. Then add the sliced tomatoes on top of the mozzarella. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Add the basil: Place fresh basil leaves on top of the tomatoes, either whole or roughly torn for extra flavor.
  3. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic glaze: Drizzle olive oil over the basil and tomatoes, then finish with a generous drizzle of balsamic glaze (or balsamic vinegar for a lighter version).
  4. Top and serve: Place the second slice of bread on top, press gently to compact the sandwich, slice it in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Variations: Add prosciutto for a non-vegetarian option or pesto for extra flavor.
  • Vegan option: Substitute mozzarella with dairy-free cheese or avocado slices for creaminess.
  • Storage: Best enjoyed fresh. If making ahead, store ingredients separately and assemble just before serving to keep the bread crispy.
