Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or almond extract for variation)
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: melted chocolate or sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Gradually add flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  5. For piped cookies, transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip and pipe shapes onto the prepared baking sheet. For shaped cookies, roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges begin to turn golden.
  7. Cool cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once cooled, optionally dip in melted chocolate and decorate with sprinkles or drizzle.

Notes

  • Chill dough for 15–20 minutes before baking to prevent spreading.
  • Use high-quality butter for the best flavor and texture.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container to maintain crispness.
  • Dough can be made ahead and frozen for up to 2 months.
