Brazilian Picadillo is a rich and flavorful Latin American dish made with lean beef, sweet raisins, briny olives, and aromatic spices. This easy one-pan recipe is perfect for meal prep and can be served over rice, in tacos, or as a standalone meal. A perfect balance of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors!

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 20g garlic, chopped
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 800g lean beef mince
  • 75g raisins
  • 100g green or black olives, sliced
  • 800g chopped tomatoes
  • 30ml white wine vinegar

Instructions

Sauté the Aromatics:

  1. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add chopped onions and green pepper, frying until softened.

2. Add Spices and Garlic:

  1. Stir in garlic, cinnamon, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, ground cloves, chili powder, and black pepper.
  2. Cook for 1 minute to release the flavors.

3. Brown the Beef:

  1. Add ground beef to the pan, breaking it apart.
  2. Cook until evenly browned.

4. Combine Remaining Ingredients:

  1. Stir in raisins, sliced olives, chopped tomatoes, and white wine vinegar.
  2. Mix well to combine all flavors.

5. Simmer:

  1. Cover and reduce heat to low.
  2. Let simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

6. Serve:

  1. Enjoy hot over rice, in tacos, or on its own.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, substitute beef with turkey or chicken mince.
  • For a vegetarian version, replace meat with lentils or plant-based mince.
  • For added texture, mix in diced potatoes or carrots.
  • For a spicier dish, increase the chili powder or add fresh chilies.
