A hearty and flavorful black bean burger made with mashed black beans, spices, and wholesome ingredients. This vegan-friendly patty is smoky, satisfying, and perfect for grilling, baking, or pan-searing.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked or 1 (15 oz) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro or parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic; sauté for about 5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some texture.
  3. Stir in the sautéed vegetables, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, pepper, and cilantro. Mix until the mixture holds together.
  4. Divide into 4–6 portions and shape into burger patties.
  5. To cook, heat a skillet or grill over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side, until golden and crisp on the edges.
  6. Serve on toasted buns with desired toppings such as lettuce, tomato, avocado, vegan cheese, or sauce.

Notes

  • Chill patties for 30 minutes before grilling to help them hold their shape.
  • For baked burgers, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Add jalapeños or BBQ sauce for a spicy or smoky variation.
  • Make gluten-free by using gluten-free breadcrumbs and tamari.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
