Beef kafta is a juicy and aromatic Middle Eastern dish made with ground beef, fresh herbs, onions, and warm spices. Shaped into skewers or patties and grilled or pan-cooked, it’s a flavorful and satisfying meal perfect for family dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 small onion, very finely grated or minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking, if pan-frying)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, grated onion, parsley, garlic, cumin, coriander, paprika, allspice, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Mix gently with your hands until evenly combined, being careful not to overmix.
  3. Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape into oval logs around skewers or form into patties.
  4. For grilling: Preheat grill to medium-high and lightly oil grates. Cook for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  5. For pan-cooking: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and cook for 4–5 minutes per side until fully cooked and browned.
  6. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Squeeze excess moisture from grated onion to prevent the mixture from becoming too wet.
  • Avoid overmixing to keep the kafta tender and juicy.
  • Internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C).
  • Can be baked at 400°F (200°C) for 15–18 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
