Baked Sausage and Sauerkraut is a hearty, flavorful dish combining savory sausages with tangy sauerkraut, all baked to perfection in the oven. This dish is easy to prepare and makes for a satisfying, comforting meal, ideal for a family dinner or special occasion.

Ingredients

  1. 46 sausages (your choice of pork, chicken, turkey, or bratwurst)
  2. 1 (14 oz) can of sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
  3. 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  4. 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  5. 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional, for authentic flavor)
  6. 1/2 cup apple cider or beer (for extra flavor, optional)
  7. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  8. 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  9. Salt, to taste (optional, as sauerkraut can be salty)
  10. Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Drain and rinse the sauerkraut under cold water to reduce its saltiness. Place it in the prepared baking dish. Add the sliced onion, caraway seeds (if using), garlic powder, black pepper, and a pinch of salt. Drizzle with olive oil or melted butter and mix to combine.
  2. Add the Sausages: Arrange the sausages on top of the sauerkraut mixture. Pour the apple cider or beer around the sausages and sauerkraut (optional).
  3. Bake the Dish: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  4. Finish the Sausages: After 25-30 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for another 15-20 minutes, or until the sausages are cooked through and nicely browned (internal temperature should reach 160°F or 71°C).
  5. Serve: Once everything is cooked, remove from the oven, let it rest for a few minutes, and garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Add cubed potatoes to the sauerkraut before baking for a heartier meal.
  • For a sweet and sour twist, add brown sugar or apple slices to the sauerkraut.
  • To make the dish spicier, use spicy sausages or add chili flakes to the sauerkraut.
  • For a vegan version, use plant-based sausages and vegetable broth.
