Apple & Cheddar Sandwiches are a sweet and savory combo featuring crisp apple slices and sharp cheddar cheese layered between slices of your favorite bread. Perfect for a quick lunch or snack, served cold or toasted.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (whole grain, sourdough, multigrain, or sandwich bread)
  • 1 apple (such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Granny Smith), thinly sliced
  • 46 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 12 tsp Dijon mustard or honey (optional)
  • 1/2 cup baby arugula or spinach (optional)
  • Butter or olive oil for toasting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Lay out the bread slices. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard or honey on one or both slices, if using.
  2. Layer the cheddar cheese, apple slices, and greens (if using) onto one slice of bread.
  3. Top with the second slice of bread to close the sandwich.
  4. To serve cold: Slice and serve immediately.
  5. To toast: Lightly butter the outer sides of the sandwich. Toast in a skillet over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden and cheese is melted.

Notes

  • Use tart, crisp apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for contrast.
  • Add deli turkey or ham for extra protein.
  • Try nut butter for a sweet-and-savory twist.
  • For make-ahead, layer cheese on both sides to prevent sogginess.
