Alabama White Sauce is a tangy, creamy, mayonnaise-based barbecue sauce from Northern Alabama, perfect for grilled meats, sandwiches, or as a dip.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: pinch of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and apple cider vinegar until smooth.
  2. Add the horseradish, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Whisk until fully combined and smooth.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  6. Serve chilled or at room temperature with your favorite grilled dishes.

Notes

  • The sauce gets better after chilling—make it ahead of time if possible.
  • Adjust the heat by adding more horseradish or hot sauce to taste.
  • Great as a dip, sandwich spread, or marinade for chicken and pork.
  • Use vegan mayo to make the sauce plant-based.
