Air Fryer Popcorn Chicken is a crispy, bite-sized version of a fast-food favorite made healthier by air frying instead of deep frying. Tender, juicy chicken pieces are coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and cooked until golden brown—perfect for snacks, dinners, or entertaining.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs or panko
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray or oil for misting

Instructions

  1. Cut chicken into bite-sized pieces and place in a bowl with buttermilk. Marinate for 15–30 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Place breadcrumbs or panko in a third bowl.
  4. Remove chicken from buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, then coat with breadcrumbs.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  7. Place chicken in a single layer in the basket (cook in batches if needed).
  8. Lightly mist the tops of the chicken with oil.
  9. Air fry for 10–12 minutes, shaking halfway through, until crispy and cooked through.
  10. Serve warm with dipping sauces of choice.

Notes

  • Use panko for extra crunchiness.
  • Spice it up with cayenne or hot sauce in the marinade.
  • To ensure crispness, don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket.
  • Freeze extras for easy reheating later.
  • Marinating improves tenderness but can be skipped in a rush.
